Energy Saving Tips

Install a programmable thermostat that can be adjust the temperature according to your schedule

Use Energy Star rated compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Set your thermostat low in the winter and high in the summer.

Take (short) showers instead of baths.

Turn your TV, computer and home electronic equipment off at the power strip rather than with the remote. Even when turned "off", most TVs, computers, DVD players and stereos still use electricity!

Wash only full loads of clothes and dishes.

Air dry clothes and dishes instead of using the dry cycle.

Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters, and radiators as needed; make sure they're not blocked by furniture, carpeting, or drapes.

Turn your lights off when you leave a room. Standard, incandescent light bulbs should be turned off whenever they are not needed. Fluorescent lights should be turned off whenever you'll be away for 15 minutes or more.

Green Mortgages
Often called Energy Efficient Mortgages (EEMs) or Energy Improvement Mortgages (EIMs) - a "green" mortgage is a type of mortgage that provides a discount or larger loan amount than a standard mortgage would allow as an incentive for purchasing an energy-efficient (usually Energy Star) home or making energy-efficient improvements. A more energy-efficient home means lower utility bills - which directly translates to a greater income, qualifying a prospective homeowner to buy a more expensive house.

What does the Energy Star rating mean?

Homes that earn the ENERGY STAR must meet guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. ENERGY STAR qualified homes are at least 15 percent more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC).

ENERGY STAR qualified homes can include a variety of energy-efficient features, such as effective insulation, high performance windows, tight construction and ducts, efficient heating and cooling equipment, and ENERGY STAR qualified lighting and appliances. These features contribute to improved home quality and homeowner comfort, and to lower energy demand and reduced air pollution. ENERGY STAR also encourages the use of energy-efficient lighting and appliances, as well as features designed to improve indoor air quality.
